Well after a long hard search I found a pale ale worthy of the goat tradition, the Scapegoat Pale Ale !! Yes it’s true, the Big Sky Brewing Co. from Missoula, Montana has blessed the over controlled Utah liquor store’s with a killer pale ale.

Next time you are in the west check out the Scapegoat Pale Ale! Three scrapes for Big Sky Brewing Co.!

Take a close look at the map (click to enlarge)! If you make it past the beer carton clockwise on July 12th, you will be a happy goat!

Bighorn 100 weekend

Posted in Speedgoat Updates on June 19th, 2008

The Big Horn weekend is upon us, one of the most beautiful courses I have ever run! Like most high altitude treks they’re all still buried under several feet of snow. The 50 mile turn around point is covered with 3 feet of snow which makes the aid station unreachable, so the course had to be changed! Fellow WS Goats are up there testing their skills on a course that is either muddy  or dried mud full of horse prints that are fairly tricky to run. Good luck Olga and Sandy!

Three scrapes!!

Squaw Peak 50 Miler

Posted in Race Results on June 10th, 2008

Squaw Peak 50 ended up being one of the craziest 50 milers I’ve ever run! The race started out with lot’s of rain as we climbed our first ascent we entered the snow zone! Yes it dumped 2 - 4 inches of snow in the morning then the sun came out and we all got to enjoy the MUD! From the winner on down every one’s time was about an hour slower with all the slip sliding we did. I had the pleasure of running with Jean Coulter who eventually took the lead  as we cruised down windy pass! Nice job Jean, see you at the Speedgoat 50k, the Wasatch 100 warm up!

There was another stellar performance from Master WasatchSpeedGoat Dave Hunt, he really enjoys the big vertical and posted a 5th place finish. Dave gives credit to his pacer and teammate Bryon Powell who was fired up for the task! Three scrapes to the masters winner.

Scott Mason - mile 50

Check this out, Cheryl Meltzer Karl’s wife ran her first 50 as Karl paced her from mile 26 to the finish, they passed a total of 31 runners the last 24 miles. Nice coach/pacer to have along side!

Hardrock is on-Handies Peak ?

Posted in Industry News on June 1st, 2008

Fellow Hardrocker Ted Mahon was skiing Handies Peak on May, 22 and this is what he discovered! All I can say is wow! I showed these to Karl Meltzer and he said “have fun sliding down Virginia’s Pass and Handies Peak! “Maybe I ‘ll take my Dynafit Skis to Grouse Gulch aid station for Handies?? You got to wonder if the firm snow pack will produce a fast time with the smooth ascents and fast descents?

Looks like it’s going to be a fun one!

Sproston Takes Women’s Title @Massanutten 100

Posted in Speedgoat Updates on May 26th, 2008

“She won without being pressed. She looked calm and in control all day. Some observers, whom we will not identify since we protect our sources, were convinced that Amy had gone out too fast and would crash and burn. She didn’t. Amy’s time was eighth on the all time women’s finishers list and she is the fifth fastest women in MMT history. (Sue Johnston is responsible for four of the times ahead of Amy’s.) “

Wow, just a re-cap on “Just another goat”

Protein and Amino Acid for endurance athletes

Posted in Industry News, Training Tips on May 6th, 2008

Introduction: A protein is any one of a large number of organic compounds that make up living organisms and are essential to their functioning. First discovered in 1838, proteins are now recognized as predominant ingredients of cells, making up more than 50 percent of the dry weight of animals. The word protein is coined from the Greek proteios, or “primary.”

Protein molecules range from the long, insoluble fibers that make up connective tissue and hair to the compact, soluble globules that can pass through cell membranes and set off metabolic reactions. Humans are made up of an estimated 30,000 different proteins, of which only about 2 percent have been adequately described. Proteins in the diet serve primarily to build and maintain cells, but their chemical breakdown also provides energy, yielding approximately 4 calories per gram, similar to carbohydrates.

Proteins are composed of about 20 different amino acids which in turn, are composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur. In a protein molecule, these acids form peptide bonds between amino and carboxyl (COOH) groups in long strands (polypeptide chains). The numerous combinations, in which the acids line up, and the helical and globular shapes into which the strands coil, help to explain the great diversity of tasks that proteins perform in living matter.
